50th Birthday Celebrations
The main focus of our week has been the preparation for the start of our birthday celebrations. It is 50 years tomorrow since the name “John Fletcher” was given to the school. We have celebrated this today with a visit from Richard, Bishop of Hereford and also Rev Rachel Parkinson who is the Chair of the Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury Methodist District. They gave blessings in our Collective Worship and answered questions devised by Y5 and Y6 about their roles and how the churches support the school. We are very grateful to them for giving their time and helping us launch our celebrations.
Over the next few weeks, the children will be researching developments across a range of areas over the last 50 years as well as looking at how the school has changed and we have already been very fortunate to receive items from former pupils.
An Open Day during which we will celebrate all this work will be held before Easter.
Year 3/4 Girls Cluster League
On Tuesday, our girls travelled to Hollinswood Primary for their first of four Cluster League matches. It was a fantastic match with both teams full of inexperienced young players, with John Fletcher giving two debuts and three girls who have only played one match before. Sadly, while the girls were very excited to be on the pitch, Hollinswood scored 2 quick goals. This didn’t dampen their spirits, with clear instructions from our experienced goalkeeper, the girls became more organised and started attacking the Hollinswood goal. In the second half, the girls had improved 100%, they were starting to string passes together and create fantastic counter-attacks. The hard work paid off, with one of our experienced year 4s scoring her first ever goal! We were unlucky to lose 2-1, but the experience will be invaluable, with all the children coming off the pitch with massive smiles. Thanks to all who came and supported!
Telford and Wrekin KS2 Orienteering competition
On Tuesday, we sent four teams to Newport to take part in the Telford and Wrekin Orienteering competition. A total of 125 teams took part from a range of schools across the borough. Our teams worked fantastically well together, they were given a map of the area as soon as they arrived and were sent off to find the different points across a vast area. Our teams finished, 67th, 37th, 31st and a brilliant finish of 7th. Our first pair were very unlucky to be one place away from making the county games. Well done to all who took part.
Last night saw four of our children take part in the Telford and Wrekin U11’s trials, for the opportunity to represent the borough in a national tournament at St Georges Park. All four were performing to their highest ability, looking comfortable with the best Telford and Wrekin have to offer. We all have our fingers crossed and hope for positive news.
Year 4 Swimming
For the swimming lesson on Tuesday 6 February the children need to bring, in addition to their swimming kit, some pyjamas, long sleeved top and bottoms.
John Muir Award
Year 5 have had an exciting introduction to the start of their John Muir Award. We have found out about the great man himself as well as spending some time in the Forest Area getting ready for new experiences and setting the scene for the challenges that they will be completing as part of their Award. Next week, we will be out of school for the day, exploring Meadow Pitmound, a local nature reserve.
Just a reminder that children who have not yet picked up their Into Film badge or membership login details, can see Mrs Lawman-Smith at lunchtime to collect them.
