A technical glitch on the Mathletics website almost disrupted proceedings this week, but thankfully we were able to print out the children’s certificates and, in all but one case (RV), use these to work out who had won the Oscars in each class. The EYFS/KS1 trophy was won by 2B whilst 6CW retained the KS2 trophy. So far this year we have presented 1744 Bronze, 339 Silver and 47 Gold certificates. At this moment in time, the system seems to be back up and running so let’s hope there will be no reoccurrence this week.
Times Tables Rockstars
This has been launched across the school now and it is super to see the enthusiasm of the children as they select their ‘rocknames’, design their avatars and, most important of all, work on improving their recall speeds. In order to get on their journey to rock stardom, each child needs to set their baseline speed by completing the ‘Studio’ challenge ten times. This then contributes to their personalised speed ‘heatmap’ which shows which times tables facts they need to focus on. The idea is to work on changing their colours from red through to green.
Alongside this, for those who enjoy a bit of competition, there is a leaderboard which has excited much comment in Year 6 this week and is providing an extra incentive for the children to try and ‘beat the teacher’! Nine children from Years 5 and 6 have already reached the heady heights of ‘Rock Legend’ status. At the time of writing, ‘Trace Fox’ was in the lead on the children’s leaderboard with a time of 1.44 seconds per question, closely followed by ‘Megan Sonar’ on 1.46 seconds and ‘Journey Rockmeister’ on 1.62 seconds. Girls Football Friendly
On Tuesday, Grange Park (Year 3/4 Telford and Wrekin finalists) came to visit for a warm-up friendly before their final. John Fletcher picked a strong team from year 5 and below to give them a worthy challenge. It was a fantastic match with high quality football played by both teams. John Fletcher girls passed and moved confidently across the pitch, they created plenty of chances and scored 4 great team goals. Credit to our defence and keeper for keeping a clean sheet and overall winning 4-0. A fantastic experience for our girls to help them develop into great footballers.
The event that was postponed last week is now taking place on Wednesday 9 May. The venue is the same – Chetwynd Deer Park, Newport and a coach has been booked to take the children. Letters were sent home with the children yesterday. Please can you return the consent form promptly.
Year 3/4 Tennis
On Tuesday, a team of four Y3/4 children took part in a tennis tournament at Telford Tennis Centre. This was yet another tournament organised by TWSSP. The children involved performed well, finishing in a creditable 9th place. All improved their skills and it was great to see such determination to do well.
As many of you may be aware, an online game that is currently popular to play is ‘Fortnite’. Whilst children are enjoying playing this, there are dangers that come with it. The game is actually rated as not being suitable for children under the age of 12 because of the violence involved in it. Players can link to anyone from around the world and the chat settings cannot be turned off. Please be aware of how your child can be safe whilst using this and similar online games.
