Our Week in Year 3 09.06.23

Welcome back to all of our Year 3 children to the final term of year!

We started this term with a mindfulness Monday where we took part in lots of mindfulness and calming activities. These including listening, seeing and making pinwheels to aid our calm breathing.

Later on, we began our playscripts unit and children are getting to grips with writing playscripts using all of the features including colons and brackets. In Maths, we have tackled finding fractions of amounts using models to help us do this.

However, our highlight has to be making our canopic jars by decorating ourselves as a Pharaoh and then using the hieroglyph alphabet to spell our name. We then made hearts to put inside our jars.

Have a great weekend,

Miss Russell and Miss Beddows.

Our Week in Year 5 – 26/05/23

Year 5 have worked exceptionally hard in this last week of term and we are very proud of every single one of them for working ‘with all their heart’. It has been a busy week and everyone deserves a well-earned half-term break!

We had a very informative healthy eating session this week in school, where we were shown the different food groups and why each was important. We completed a food diary and identified some areas that we need to improve in!

In maths this week, we have been looking at coordinates and translations. We understand that the x-coordinate always comes first, and that translations are a movement of a point or a shape.

In English, we have written our letters to Mrs Cross to reverse Mr Andrew and Mrs Lawman-Smith’s decision to shorten breaktime. They used evidence to support their points and tried to include a variety of relative clauses, subordinate clauses and higher level vocabulary to persuade her.

We concluded our one-minute challenges in PE this week. There was lots of wonderful resilience on show to see what they could achieve!

In science, we were presented with a tub of extremely mucky water, which had flour, pasta, rice, biscuits and sugar mixed together. This represented sewage water, and after exploring how water treatment facilities work, the children had to come up with their own systems to clean the water. After a variety of filtering and sieving, the children were successful in their mission!

Our butterflies have reached the end of their time with us, and we held a releasing ceremony this afternoon. It has been lovely to see the children take such an interest in the creatures and they will be keeping an eye out for them around the school grounds from now on!

Have a lovely half-term!

Our week in Reception – 26.05.2023

Reception have had a wonderful last week of half term. ALL children have moved into the next group up in phonics – we are incredibly proud of their hard work and for your continued support.

On Monday we had our second Eatwell workshop where we learnt about different food groups and what a balanced diet is.

In maths we have been learning about doubling and finding the same again. The children confidently doubled using concrete resources and found the total amount once doubled.

In Forest School we worked collaboratively to identify minibeasts. In R.E. we continued our learning all about religious celebrations. We learnt about weddings and why they are significant.

In PSHE we have been thinking about what a good friend is and how to be a good friend. The children discussed different scenarios and reflected on whether they demonstrated friendly or unfriendly behaviour.

Key information for after half term:

  • Homework will be sent out on Monday (please return any homework sheets as soon as you have completed your tasks).
  • Forest School will be on Tuesday. Please ensure your child is wearing appropriate footwear and clothing for the weather.
  • P.E. will be on Friday. Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing for the weather. We are aiming to have P.E. outdoors weather permitting.
  • Reading books will be sent out on Fridays. E-books will be assigned on Friday.

Have another wonderful half term and stay safe in the sun! We look forward to seeing you back at school after the holidays!

Year 1 Phonic Screening Check

Dear Year 1 parents and carers,

As has previously been communicated last half term, all Year 1 children are due to undertake the phonic screening in line with national guidance. This will take place during the week of 12.06.2023. Below you will find further information regarding the test.

What is the Phonics Screening Check?

The check is made up of 40 words, and usually lasts 5-10 minutes. Some words are real words, and others are nonsense, or ‘alien’ words, that help to
show if pupils can work out how to decode words they haven’t seen before.
The check helps us to identify:
• How pupils are progressing in phonics
• Where to provide additional teaching and support

The phonic screening will be carried out by a familiar adult. All children have had lots of opportunities to familiarise with the delivery of the check.

Below is an example of last years phonic screening.

Phonic screening materials 2022

Do we get to know the results?

We will let you know the results as part of your child’s end of year report during the summer term. The result indicates simply whether they have passed or not. If your child does not meet the expected standard in the check, they shall carry out the test again in Year 2.

What can you do to help at home?

  1. Help your child to use ‘Special Friends’, ‘Fred Talk’ to read words.
  2. Practise reading sounds speedily.
  3. Watch the Virtual Classroom films below together.
  4. Listen to your child read their Storybook and their assigned reading book on Oxford Owl, daily.

How do I use the Virtual Classroom?

  1. Set aside 10 minutes to watch a film with your child each day.
  2. Find a quiet space for your child to watch the film on a laptop or tablet.
  3. Praise your child as they join in with the lesson – make it fun!

Have a lovely half term! :-)

Our Value this half term: HOPE

Dear Families

We’ve had a busy half term, with SATs for both KS2 and KS1, along with lots and lots of learning! 🙂

The children have worked so hard and we are so very proud of each and every one of them.  For KS2, we know that the SATs have not been easy.  You may have heard through the media that some papers were particularly tough, and we know that years of lost learning through Covid and other factors can’t simply be crammed into a few short terms.  But what I can say is that the children should be so proud of themselves.  They tried their very, very best.  They didn’t complain and they worked with all their heart.  They must remember that they are worth much more than a test score, that could vary from one day to the next.  They have their own unique talents, abilities and qualities that tests cannot measure.  We are looking forward to a lovely summer of activities, with an extra special focus now on writing ;-).

Please have a wonderful half term – fingers crossed the weather is fantastic for everyone – and we look forward to seeing you all back on Monday 5th June!

Our Week in Year 5 – 19/05/23

We’ve had yet another great week in Year 5 this week – everybody is continuing to show us their resilience and hard work on a daily basis. Keep it up!

In English this week, the children were faced with the prospect of Mr Andrew and Mrs Lawman-Smith reducing their breaktimes and lunchtimes to ensure more learning inside the classroom could take place. The children were dismayed by this and therefore decided to write a formal letter to Mrs Cross asking for the decision to be reversed. They have had to show their understanding of formal language whilst also showing their knowledge of how letters are presented. The children will be writing their letters next week and we will see what the decision is from there!

In our maths learning, Year 5 have looked at properties of 3D shapes, as well as classifying 2D shapes as regular or irregular. The children have had a variety of reasoning problems to deepen their understanding, ensuring that appropriate maths vocabulary is being used at all times!

The children had another hands on science lesson on Thursday this week, where they had to see is jelly dissolved in water, and then comparing this to jelly melting. After that, it was time to create salt crystals using epsom salts and normal table salt. We will see how they turn out over the next week!

We continued our learning about rivers this week by exploring terms such as meander, mouth and delta. We then explored the River Severn looking at the upper, middle and lower course of the river.

We really enjoyed our Alice in Wonderland performance on Monday! Some of the children even got the chance to go on stage with the performers!

Scan this QR code for a video from the pantomime!

Our chrysalises are now in their butterfly nets ready for the next stage of their metamorphism. We are keeping our eyes on any movement and hoping they will be okay!

Our Week in Year 3 19.05.23

Year 3 have had another wonderful week working at everything with all of their heart.

In Writing and Reading we have continued to study our biography text all about Howard Carter (an Egyptologist) and have started writing our own biography based on him. We have tried hard to incorporate lots of our Year 3 features from the marking ladder. We have even tried hard to select and use appropriate words from our Year 3 and 4 Word List.

In Maths, we have continued to try our hardest with capacity by identifying volume in a container and adding and subtracting as well as comparing different masses. We even had some water play earlier in the week to help with our measuring and reading scales skills.

In RE, we have continued our work on Pentecost and looked deeper into the Lord’s Prayer. We focussed on what this tells and what certain words such as ‘hallowed’ and ‘thy’ meant. In History, we focussed on Pharaohs and looked at them in detail by describing what they looked like – many had animal heads and we delved deeper into the hidden meanings behind this.

Have a fabulous weekend
