This week in Reception we have been continuing to observe the seasonal changes. We took our own photographs of the changes we noticed. We have even started to see changes in our seeds that we have planted. In science we have also set up our own experiments to regrow vegetables. We can’t wait to observe what happens!

Reception and Year 1 Visit Park Hall Farm, Oswestry

Dear Parents,

The children are all looking forward to our upcoming trip to Park Hall Farm on Wednesday 20th March. Here are a few reminders in preparation for our visit:

The children will be leaving school by coach at approximately 9:00am and will return to the school by the end of the school day. Please ensure your child is in school on time to facilitate this.

  • All children must be in their school uniform and wear suitable shoes for outdoor and muddy conditions – we advise wellie boots.
  • It is advised that all children should wear a waterproof jacket as several activities will be held outdoors.
  • Please remember to provide your child with a nutritious packed lunch, unless you have opted for a school packed lunch.
  • If your child has an inhaler in school, please provide your child with a backpack. This will ensure that your child always has their inhaler on them in case an adult is required to administer this.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Smith and Mrs Nicholls

Our week in Reception – 08.03.24

Reception have had a fun filled week this week. Our focus text, ‘What the Ladybird Heard,’ written by Julia Donaldson inspired Reception to research maps. We learnt about the different uses for maps. We then created our own farm, then created our own maps to attract visitors to them.

Later in the week we had an informative session learning all about young carers. We then watched a fantastic magic and circus performance! Some of our children were then selected to take part in a workshop.

Today we have also been busy celebrating World Book Day. We visited the book fair to browse the selection of books on offer. We shared stories, created our own stories and told them. We then played ‘The Masked Reader.’ We listened to stories, poems and information books being read my different members of staff and had to guess who the reader was! Thank you to all of our parents for joining us to celebrate this afternoon.

Our week in Reception – 23.02.24

Reception have had a busy first week back. We have also started our new topic, learning all about farms. We have collated questions we would like to research and find the answers to over the coming weeks.

In phonics some children have started to learn their set 2 sounds, which is brilliant!  You can find some additional videos below to further practise these. Please remember to sign your child’s reading diary each time you have read at home.

In maths this week we have combined two amounts to find the total and have been conceptually subitising two amounts to find the whole amount. Towards the end of the week we have started to explore different lengths and height.

World Book Day Friday 8th March 2024

World Book Day is taking place on Friday 8th March. As a school we are going to be celebrating this day and have chosen the theme “Snuggle up with a good book!” On this day, we are asking pupils to come into school wearing their favourite pyjamas and snuggly clothes. This is so we can all snuggle up with a good book and immerse ourselves in the world of literature. Children are invited to bring their favourite book from home.

Throughout the day, pupils will take part in a range of exciting hands on and virtual activities to enhance their reading and ensure they are continuing to grow their love of reading. There will also be some challenges such as guess which staff member is snuggled up with a good book.

Parents are invited into school to share a book with their child on Friday 8th March, from 2:50pm. Please enter via the main office where you will be shown to your child’s class. At the end of the shared reading session, please leave the school via the office to sign out.

Children will be given a £1 book token to be spent at our school Book Fair or in a local bookstore on a range of identified World Book Day texts. You can find your local bookstore and have a look at the books available by visiting: https://www.worldbookday.com/books/

From Friday 8th March – Wednesday 13th March we will have our annual book fair. The book fair will be held in the South Hall on these dates from 3:30-4:00pm. This an opportunity for you and your child to browse a range of exciting books from a range of genres and purchase one or maybe more. Further information regarding the book fair will be sent nearer the time.

Our week in Reception – 19.01.2024

Reception have had a busy week. On Monday we returned to find that our egg had disappeared! We followed the clues to find footage of a dragon having visited our classroom over the weekend. The dragon thanked us for taking good care of their egg.

In maths we have been learning to find one more and one less than a given number up to 5 using the sentence stem, ‘one less than __ is ___.’ The children are more confident in using these sentence stems to help frame their answer, which is fantastic. We have also revisited subitising up to 5. Please find your homework to consolidate this learning in your homework folder.

In phonics this week we continue to consolidate our set 1 special friends when reading words. Children who are now reading books, we are focusing on rereading each sentence after decoding to build up their fluency.

Homework this week is to complete your challenge all about subitising. You will find this in your homework folder.

Our Week in Reception – 12.01.2024

Reception have had a fantastic first week back. We started off with the fabulous pantomime on Monday. The children thoroughly enjoyed joining in with singing and dancing.

We returned to find an unusual egg in our classroom and predicted what may hatch from it and who may have left it there. We have been investigating, trying to identify different types of eggs to find out. We then created observational artwork based on this.

Home reading and homework

Homework this week is to complete your challenge all about zero! It has been sent home in your homework folder. Please ensure you read your home reading book daily at home to develop your confidence and fluency. You will find a book mark containing red words.
