Reading at Home

As a parent/carer you are the person who knows your child best, so you are ideally placed to help them with reading, writing, speaking and listening.  Everywhere you go there are things to read – whether you are shopping, waiting for a bus, visiting a museum or sitting in the dentist. There are lots of fun ways to improve reading without children realising they are learning!  By pointing out words all around you, you will be making children aware of how important reading and literacy are.

Children will also be sent home each week with a reading book matched to their reading stage. In EYFS and KS1 children are sent home with a decodable phonics book, matched to their phonics stage, along with a reading book for pleasure.

Children accessing phonics in school will also be assigned an additional E-book and corresponding quiz via their Oxford Owl log in weekly. This book will be the same as they have been reading in class that week, this well help to build their fluency when decoding. You will receive these log in details from your class teacher. Oxford Owl for School and Home

In KS2 children will be sent home with a reading book appropriate for their reading stage and a reading book for pleasure.

It is an expectation here at John Fletcher of Madeley Primary School that all children are read with every day at home. This should be documented in their reading diaries and will be regularly checked by their class teacher. We also welcome comments as to what your child enjoyed about their book or other books they have read at home.
